Bragg, Braxton
Bragg, Braxton Bragg, Braxton, 1817â"76, Confederate general in the U.S. Civil War, b. Warrenton, N.C. A graduate of West Point, he fought the Seminole and in the Mexican War was promoted to lieutenant colonel for distinguished service at Buena Vista. He resigned from the army in 1856 and lived on his Louisiana plantation until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he was appointed a Confederate brigadier general and assigned to command the coast from Pensacola, Fla., to Mobile, Ala. Shortly after being promoted to major general (Jan., 1862), he assumed command of Gen. A. S. Johnston's 2d Corps, leading it in the battle of Shiloh (April). With Johnston's death, Bragg was made a general, and he succeeded (June) General Beauregard in command of the Army of Tennessee. His invasion of Kentucky (Aug.â"Oct., 1862) was unsuccessful, ending in retreat to Tennessee after Gen. D. C. Buell caught up with him at Perryville. A reorganized Union army under Gen. W. S. Rosecrans was then sent against him an d at Murfreesboro (Dec. 31, 1862â"Jan. 2, 1863) forced him to withdraw again. In the Chattanooga campaign , Bragg, victorious in the battle of Chickamauga, laid siege to the Union army in Chattanooga, but in Nov., 1863, Gen. U. S. Grant thoroughly defeated him and forced him to retire into Georgia. Gen. J. E. Johnston took over his command (December) and Bragg went to Richmond, where he became military adviser to Jefferson Davis , with nominal rank as commander in chief of Confederate armies. After the war he was chief engineer of Alabama and later lived in Texas, where he died. See biography by D. C. Seitz (1924, repr. 1971); study by G. McWhiney (2 vol., 1969â"91). Imagine this, itââ¬â¢s Friday night and youââ¬â¢re just chilling at home itââ¬â¢s about midnight when a loved one walks through the door and is stumbling around - mumbling profusely. You ask them what happened and they respond ââ¬Å"Nothing, Iââ¬â¢m perfectly fine.â⬠You try and help them but as you get closer you get a strong whiff of stale vodka. You ask them how much theyââ¬â¢ve had to drink but when they open their mouth to answer, instead of words coming out, puke does. If you donââ¬â¢t want this happening to people you love, then something needs to be done about alcoholism. For the past two weeks I have been researching the topic of alcoholism. Lifestyles Introduction If you look up the word Lifestyle in the dictionary you will find the definition ââ¬Å"a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or groupâ⬠. Another definition that would be of more relevance and importance to marketers is ââ¬Å"Lifestyle refers to a pattern of consumption, of how he or she spends their time and moneyâ⬠. The approach to superstition of Thomas Hardy Essay Example For Students
The approach to superstition of Thomas Hardy Essay Compare In Detail The Approach To Superstition Of Thomas Hardy In THE SUPERSTITIOUS MANS STORY And Penelope Fitzgerald In THE AXE. Think About The Nature Of Superstitions And The Ways That The Writers Have Chosen To Portray It. I am going to compare these two stories that were written 100 years apart. The Superstitious Mans Story is set in the 1830s but was written in 1891 when hardy was at the height of his fame like JK Rowling. The Axe was written by Penelope in 1977 and is set in an office and written in the style of a memorandum. They are both stories to do with superstition. Superstition n. 1 belief in the supernatural; irrational fear of the unknown. 2 practices, belief, or religion based on this. Derivative: superstitious adj. superstitiously adv. ] The Axe is not obviously a superstitious story, but in deeper analysis there are some vague superstitions e. g. damp smell in Singleburys office. The superstitious Mans Story shows some more clear superstitions and is more of a traditional Ghost Story. It set in more superstitious times when belief in witches and sorcerers. It also has a superstitious background because William Privetts son died and its set on midsummers eve a mystical date on the calendar where funny things go afoot. In The Superstitious Mans Story is about a man who is going to die. It has many well-known superstitions of the time. The first one is where William walks under the bells. It was thought that the bells know when they will be ringing for a funeral and they go heavy and sad. Then he was seen lying down in the graveyard. This is because it was believed that the spirit would visit the graveyard where they would be buried close to their death. When he actually died a white moth escaped from his mouth when he died. This was another superstition as the moth was seen as the spirit escaping from the body.
